Merrimack River Water Quality Alert: July 18, 2018

The Merrimack River Watershed Council reports that there were sewage releases into the river during yesterday’s storms.  Sewage-related pathogens may be in the river for three or four days until it all gets flushed out by the river current.  Take care if you do any fishing or other activities in the Merrimack.

Summer Club Fishing Trips Update

No fishing tonight (Tuesday, July 17th).  Stay safe and dry.  See you in August.

Be aware of the weather forecast for thunderstorms on July 17th.
Fishing in the rain proves that you are dedicated.  Fishing in between the lightning bolts shows something else!

The weather forecast for tomorrow, July 17th, calls for thunderstorms.  We will post here again sometime tomorrow letting you know if the fishing trip will happen.  Check your email, check the website, check the forum.  Do not assume the trip will happen unless you see something in one of those places confirming it.

Our purpose is to be both an educational club and a social club. Club fishing trips are social events and the best way to put into practice everything we talk about at our formal club meetings. Come out and learn from fellow club members.

These trips are open to all club members (at no charge.) Bring your own gear including bait and lures. Remember that all Junior trips (announced on the club forum and via email) are also open to all club members. Juniors trips are not listed here.

These trips are designed for our adult members with some fishing experience and their own equipment. The trips may be appropriate for teens under close supervision by a parent. Novice fishermen (especially our Junior members) should start with attending Junior Fishing trips (announced via email, not this website.)

Remembering Kay Moulton

Kay Moulton and Bob Smith

On Saturday, June 30th, our club lost its biggest booster, mentor, island icon, and most of all, our friend, Kay Moulton. Kay and her husband Ray opened Surfland’s doors in 1960, three short years after this club was founded, and the bond between the club and the shop was immediately formed. Kay’s generosity, especially to our Juniors’ program, was beyond description. She helped the club many times when times were tough for the club with her many donations of tackle and sage advice.

Kay was revered by those who knew her and even those who came to Surfland once in a while. And if you were lucky, you were known as a “Kay Customer”, emblazoned on a T shirt once sold at the shop. And you were even luckier if you ended up with her peanut brittle at our annual Yankee swap. But most of all you were blessed if you got to know this wonderful person as I did over the past 33 years.

Kay leaves a legacy that is beyond compare. Everyone along the eastern seaboard knew Kay. Anyone who knew fishing knew of Kay and Surfland. This clubs owes a debt of gratitude to Kay and Surfland. She and her crew were the recipient of the first Bob Smith Honorary award for their contributions to the club. That award hangs proudly over the window of the shop, so when you go in to pay your respects take a look up and you’ll be reminded of this remarkable woman and the mark she left on everyone who was fortunate to meet her. You are missed, my friend.

June 2018 Monthly Tournament Drawing for $25 Gift Certificate to Surfland Bait & Tackle

Congratulations to  Mark Gilday, who won a $25 gift certificate to Surfland Bait & Tackle at our June club meeting.

Throughout our Year-Long Tournament Season, a drawing will be held each month. Every club member with one tournament entry (or more) in the past month has their name entered into the drawing.  Future drawings will be held in July, August, and September.  The lucky winner’s name is pulled out of the hat and gets to gear up at Surfland Bait & Tackle courtesy of Plum Island Surfcasters.

All senior club members can enter any size bluefish or keeper-size Striped Bass (28 inches or longer) in our tournament.  Junior members can enter any size Bluefish or Striped Bass (schoolies count for our Juniors.)  Even if a huge fish is leading in our tournament, it is worth entering your fish to qualify you for the monthly drawing.

Surlfand Bait & Tackle is a great place to weigh your fish for the “Kept Fish” category.    They even have the tournament entry forms for you available in the shop.  Remember that you cannot use your own scale to weigh a “Kept Fish.”  You must weigh it on a government-certified scale (available at some tackle shops, food stores, etc.)  This is necessary to ensure that the weight is accurate.
